JUDGE SAYS FIRST-DEGREE

A Bakersfield man accused of shooting his mother and stepfather at their northwest Bakersfield home has been ordered to stand trial. The charge is first-degree murder and Wednesday’s ruling came over the objection of Derek Connell’s attorney. Paul Cadman says there was no premeditation in the deaths of Christopher and Kim Higginbotham on April 30th, so the charge should be second-degree. He’s upset his client could still be eligible for the death penalty.
