Longtime outdoors columnist Steve Merlo of the Bakersfield Californian has died of an apparent heart attack. The newspaper received word from his sister Tuesday but did not indicate where he was at the time or give his age. Merlo wrote a weekly column about hunting and fishing around Kern County, having grown up an outdoorsman in the Buttonwillow area.
