PROP 57 PASSAGE WORRIES D.A.

Prop 57 has the District Attorney concerned about impacts on public safety.D.A. Lisa Green says the proposition passed this week would make about 16,000 inmates immediately eligible to apply for parole. The new law requires they be able to convince the parole board that they are rehabilitated, however it provides no money for new rehab programs. Green says the State District Attorneys Association will meet with Gov. Brown to negotiate implementation of the law. That includes defining what a non-violent offender is. Currently, gang members with firearms, domestic violence convicts, child and elder abusers and human traffickers are all considered non-violent under the Penal Code.
