Supporters of an effort to have California leave the U.S. and become an independent nation have given up.They had been trying to put a measure on next year’s ballot. The Yes California campaign notified the Secretary of State’s office Monday they only have about 100 thousand of the 550 thousand signatures needed to qualify for the ballot. The referendum would have called on state lawmakers to begin an exit process.
