The numbers are still big but Kern County Animal Services reports fewer stray animals were brought into the shelter following the fourth of July holiday. Director Nick Cullen credits increased community involvement for the decline of disoriented dogs who ran away.

119 strays have been brought into the shelter since the holiday while last year saw nearly 180 animals come in.
