The man who pleaded no contest to killing another man in northwest Bakersfield and leaving the burned body in an orchard has been sentenced to more than 36 years in prison.

Matthew Mejia admitted to killing Justin Brewer more than two years ago over the theft of some items. Three other defendants in the case await sentencing next month.
