Some Kern County students in elementary schools are experiencing challenges in literacy. Teresa Twisselman with the Kern County Superintendent of Schools says it’s a challenge for teachers when parents don’t speak enough English in the home, or are trying to learn a second language. Twisselman says 67-percent of the students in third grade don’t meet reading standards, they’re currently seeking volunteers for the annual Community Reading Project.
