RANCHES EVACUATED, LIVESTOCK KILLED IN FIRE

A large fire that broke out in southeast Bakersfield caused evacuations and took a huge toll on livestock.

The strong winds around 1:30 Monday afternoon quickly spread the flames into ranches along Cottonwood Road and East White Lane. It burned about 400 acres before it was put out.

Around 13 horses were wrangled off one ranch, but as many as 20 others may have died. At least three structures have burned.
