A stretch of Highway 99 south of Bakersfield has been dedicated to a fallen Highway Patrol Officer. The roadway near Highway 166 will be renamed for Gerald Dormaier who was killed on Christmas 1980. The 14-year veteran was struck by a tanker trunk going at high speeds in the fog.
