POLICE READY SHOTSPOTTER

Bakersfield Police are ready to install a sensor system that lets them respond faster to gun crimes in gang heavy neighborhoods. ShotSpotter pinpoints the gunfire and alerts officers on their cell phones less than a minute later. The sensors can also tell officers which way the suspect ran away.

BPD say they also hope it improves community relations and help them solve crimes quicker.

The network will cover three miles from Brundage Lane to Old Town Kern, with the sensors being installed on city property and schools in January. A $450,000 federal grant is paying for the two year project.
