Kern High School District trustees took suggestions from the public on how to redraw their voting districts in time for this year’s election. Greater Lamont Chamber of Commerce President Jose Gonzalez was at last [mon] night’s board meeting and says keeping his city together with Arvin will push the District to build a new campus. “We definitely want to see a high school within our district, and that’s why we want someone who would represent the community of Lamont on the board.” The Dolores Huerta Foundation accused KHSD of gerrymandering boundary lines to exclude Latinos and threatened to sue, the district denied the claim but moved forward after a court sided with the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund over boundaries for Kern County Supervisors, finding the Voters Rights Act had been violated. Recommendations on new KHSD boundaries are expected April 6th.
