Police and city firefighters have detained a suspected arsonist after a garage and outbuilding caught fire at an apartment complex down the street from Bakersfield High School.

The fire started after 8:00 Friday night on California Avenue near H Street, and Bakersfield Fire Battalion Chief Trevor Martinusen says they were able to keep it from spreading.  No one was hurt, but the smoke could be seen by fans watching the football game at Griffith Field.

The identity or motive of the suspected arsonist has not been released.
