2 inmates investigated in attack on California prison guards

TEHACHAPI, Calif. (AP) – The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says an attack on two prison guards by inmates is being investigated as attempted homicide.

The guards were attacked Monday evening in a housing unit office at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi.

A corrections statement says officers used force and pepper spray to stop the attack, and an inmate-made weapon was recovered.

The two officers were treated at area hospitals for minor injuries and released.

The inmates were treated for minor injuries and transported to another prison.

One was identified as 26-year-old Alfonso Verduzco, who was sentenced to life with possibility of parole for attempted murder in Riverside County.

The other was identified as 24-year-old Christian Rodriguez, who was sentenced in Ventura County to life without possibility of parole for first-degree murder.
