Uber And Lyft Consider Franchises For Drivers

(San Francisco, CA) — Uber and Lyft are both considering offering their California drivers franchises to avoid making them employees. Sources tell the New York Times the ride-hailing companies are seriously discussing licensing their brands to maintain an arms-length relationship with drivers and get around California’s new independent contractor law. A San Francisco judge has ordered the companies to make their drivers employees by this Thursday, but Uber has threatened to leave the state instead. The sources say the franchising decision is on hold pending the result of a November ballot measure that would exempt app-based companies from the state’s tight restrictions on independent contractor status.
