Earthquake Swarm Hits Rural Southeastern California

(Westmorland, CA) — An earthquake swarm has rattled residents in a rural area of southeastern California. The swarm is centered beneath agricultural fields south of the Salton Sea almost three miles northeast of the small town Westmorland. The USGS reports that the hundreds of earthquakes included a 4.9-magnitude tremor on Wednesday. Coincidentally, state officials launched a new quake awareness campaign “Don’t Get Caught Off Guard” to raise awareness of the state’s earthquake warning system. The system detects the start of a quake and sends alerts so people can protect themselves before the shaking arrives.
