Bakersfield Police K-9 Patrol Vehicle Involved in Traffic Collision

On May 18, 2021, at about 7:36 AM, a Bakersfield Police officer in a marked K9 vehicle was traveling to assist officers who were in a foot pursuit of an auto theft suspect in southwest Bakersfield. The officer was driving his vehicle with lights and siren activated, southbound on Oak Street. The officer stopped his vehicle at the intersection of Oak Street and California Avenue and proceeded into the intersection at approximately 5 MPH with emergency lights and siren activated. A vehicle, traveling eastbound on California Avenue struck the police vehicle and overturned. The collision caused the involved vehicles to strike two additional vehicles stopped for northbound travel on Oak Street.

No parties advised that they were injured and all declined transportation by medical aid. The K9 in the patrol vehicle was uninjured.

Officers have processed a video of the accident, as well as interviewed several independent witnesses. The primary collision factor is under investigation, alcohol is not a factor and there was no enforcement action.
