Suspect Wounded in Officer Involved Shooting

A man refuses to pull over to BPD and a chase ends in an officer-involved-shooting Wednesday night.On June 16th, 2021, at about 9:00 pm, officers of the Bakersfield Police Department attempted to make a traffic stop in the area of Olive Drive and Knudsen Drive. The driver, an adult male, failed to stop and led officers on a long vehicle pursuit lasting close to an hour. During the vehicle pursuit the suspect was driving in a reckless manner, endangering the lives of officers and other drivers. At one point during the pursuit the suspect exited his vehicle and entered another vehicle being driven by an innocent bystander. As he was attempting to forcibly take the bystander’s vehicle, an officer involved shooting occurred. The suspect was subsequently taken into custody and transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A firearm belonging to the suspect was recovered at the scene. The vehicle being driven by the suspect was determined to be stolen out of Bakersfield.

No officers were injured during the incident. This incident is currently under investigation and more details will be forthcoming as additional information is known.
