Pedestrian Hit and Killed on Highway 178

Bakersfield-area California Highway Patrol were called out around 9 p.m. Monday night for a report of a pedestrian walking in and out of traffic lanes on the westbound Highway 178 near Union Avenue. While en-route, officers received a call that a traffic collision had taken place in the same area. When they arrived, the pedestrian was down in the route and suffered fatal injuries. Officers say a Toyota had been traveling westbound when the pedestrian stepped from the center median into the path of the vehicle who was unable to stop in time. The pedestrian struck the front-end of the Toyota and hit the metal center divider. CHP say all occupants in the vehicle were wearing seat belts and at this time drugs or alcohol are not suspected factors.

The pedestrian will be identified by the Kern Coroner’s Office at a later time.
