An inmate housed in Delano has been convicted on two felony counts after attacking a fellow inmate.

Ricardo Mathews, 53, was found guilty Wednesday of assault with a deadly weapon and being an inmate being in possession of a weapon.

The Kern County District Attorney’s Office says Mathews left his cell at Kern Valley State Prison in November 2022 and used a self-made weapon to beat another prisoner for nearly thirty seconds.

Mathews was set to be released in 2030 but now faces an additional 25-years to life at his hearing May 14th.
