Bakersfield’s new budget sparked a heated debate over public safety funds and whether they’re being used to help the fight against homelessness.
City leaders on Tuesday reviewed the proposed $850 million budget for next year.
Concerns surfaced about how $12 million in Measure N funds are being used. Measure N is a voter-approved sales tax used to fund Bakersfield’s Public Safety and Vital city services.
Councilman Zack Bashirtash criticized the use of public safety funds, specifically those meant to combat homelessness.
City Manager Christian Clegg defended the use of city funds, referencing recent improvements in homeless shelters and permanent housing.
The proposed budget is $46 million lower than this year’s budget.
