A death row inmate is dead following an attack by another inmate at Kern Valley State Prison in Delano.

Officials say Julian Mendez, 46, died after being assaulted by Mario Renteria, 36, on Friday.

Authorities say a larger brawl involving more than thirty other prisoners broke out during the attack.

Prison staff used chemical agents and blast grenades to stop the fighting.

Mendez had been on death row for killing two teenagers in 2002.

Renteria is serving a life sentence for murder and remains in restricted housing while authorities investigate.
