man enters plea after fatal hit and run

A Bakersfield man faces two years in prison after pleading no contest to two felony charges in connection to a deadly hit and run crash five years ago.

Roman Bernal, 28, pleaded no contest Tuesday to vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and hit and run causing death.

Police say Bernal struck a pedestrian who was crossing in an unmarked crosswalk at the intersection of Chester and California avenues the night of May 12, 2020, then fled the scene.

He admitted to police he repaired and painted his vehicle after the crash.

Sentencing is set for July 30.
