alleged ebt thieves must prove where bail money came from

Three Romanian citizens charged with EBT fraud in Kern County were granted bail Tuesday morning, but they must prove the money was legally obtained.

Camelia Ionita, 41, Vasile Barbu, 44, and Briceag Ionita, 49, are due back in court next month for a hearing at which they’ll be expected to show where the bail money came from.

Prosecutors say the men were caught with 181 cloned EBT cards and over $42,000 in cash when they were apprehended in Fresno July 2.

Each suspect posted $20,000 bail and must wear an ankle monitor once they get out of jail.

The men are part of an organized crime ring that bilked hundreds of Kern County EBT recipients out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
