gruesome details emerge following death of 8-year-old

Troubling new details are emerging following the death of an 8-year-old girl whose battered body was found in a bathtub at a central Bakersfield motel.

Police found the remains of Genesis Mata on Saturday at the La Quinta Inn on Riverside Drive, but say she died the day before after allegedly being tortured by her father and stepmother.

Ray Mata, Jr., 31, and Graciela Bustamonte, 27, were charged Tuesday with first-degree murder, torture, child cruelty, child abuse, and aggravated mayhem.

Court records indicate Genesis’s body showed signs of skin-splitting and massive blistering after being scalded with boiling water. Her back reportedly had massive scarring from consistent beatings, and her fingernails were missing because her hands had been slammed in a door frame.

The fatal blow came when Mata allegedly knocked the child unconscious with a punch to her abdomen.

The scene was so gruesome, police ordered everyone out of the room.

Mata and Bustamonte face additional counts of torture and cruelty for alleged abuse against an 11-year-old boy — his first initial J. and last name Mata.

Mata allegedly told authorities the abuse took place because Genesis “wouldn’t listen.”
