Outrage continues over plans to open the state’s largest detention center in California City.

Community members, immigrant rights advocates, and local leaders gathered in protest outside City Hall Tuesday ahead of a scheduled city council meeting.

Protesters’ demands include increased transparency, compliance with California’s public health, zoning, and environmental laws, and an immediate halt to CoreCivic’s operations until all permits and licenses are reviewed.

In April, privately-owned CoreCivic reached an agreement with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to convert its 2560-bed facility into the state’s newest and largest migrant detention center.

California City Mayor Marquette Hawkins acknowledges the reopened facility will be an economic boost for the area — adding some 150 support roles and 400 correctional officers.
