The Kern County Board of Education voted on Tuesday to ban transgender athletes from participating in sports that align with their gender identity.

The controversy comes on the heels of a lawsuit filed last month by the Justice Department against California for allegedly violating civil rights law by allowing transgender athletes to compete on girls’ sports teams.

The California Department of Education has maintained its stance to allow students to compete on teams that match their preferred gender, despite threats from the Trump administration to withhold federal funding.

Several school boards across the state have supported similar motions to ban transgender athletes from girls’ sports.
