The Kern County Coroner’s Office has confirmed the cause of death for a child left alone with his brother inside a hot car in southwest Bakersfield.

1-year-old Amillio Gutierrez was pronounced dead at the hospital from heat stroke June 29, 2025, after his mother, Maya Hernandez, 20, allegedly left him and his 2-year-old brother inside her car for about two hours while she got a lip filler injection at a medical spa on Real Road. The 2-year-old survived.

Hernandez has pleaded not guilty numerous charges including murder and willful cruelty to a child and will appear in court again on September 8.
