public defender cites conflict of interest in murder case

A Kern County woman accused of killing her foster son may soon get a new lawyer.

The Public Defender’s Office says it has a conflict of interest representing Margaret Eichorst.

Eichorst, 33, is charged with first degree murder and assault causing death after Kern County Sheriff’s deputies found her foster son, Alejandro Perez, Jr., 3, not breathing in the 500 block of El Tejon Avenue in February 2024.

The boy suffered cuts and bruises and died from blunt force trauma.

A judge will hear the appeal on Thursday. The Indigent Defense Program will take over the defense if the judge approves.

Trial is set for next month.
