committee votes down leno’s law

California lawmakers have shot down a vehicle smog law by a Bakersfield state senator and a popular TV personality.

Hollywood star power wasn’t enough to convince the Assembly Appropriations Committee Friday to advance Assembly Bill 712, also known as Leno’s Law, which would allow classic car owners to be fully exempt from the state’s rigorous smog-check requirements.

Former Tonight Show host Jay Leno joined forces with Bakersfield Republican Shannon Grove to craft and push the bill which failed to advance out of committee to a vote by the full legislature.

The bill would exempt, on an ongoing basis, collector cars whose model year is 35 years or older from the state’s smog check law. Leno and Grove say exempting classic cars from the biennial smog check would strengthen California’s “car culture” by helping preserve these historical treasures.

Collector vehicles built in 1975 or earlier are exempt from portions of a biennial smog test.
