suspected escapee faces new charges

New felony charges have been leveled against an inmate who allegedly escaped from Kern County Sheriff’s deputies.

Francisco Garcia, 23, was captured Monday evening at a home in Lamont and pleaded not guilty Wednesday to felony charges related to the alleged escape.

The incident occurred Saturday night when Garcia reportedly slipped away from deputies who transported him to an appointment at Kern Medical. Surveillance video shows a man in an orange jumpsuit running through the parking lot with a sheriff’s deputy in pursuit.

Elektra Espinoza, 20, is one of two women accused of helping Garcia escape. She pleaded not guilty to accessory charges. Jasmine Morales, 32, posted bail and is no longer in custody.

At sentencing next week, Garcia faces up to 80 years to life in prison for a shooting that wounded two men on Kentucky Street in 2021.
