BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — A preliminary hearing for a couple accused in the death of an 8-year-old Bakersfield girl is confirmed for Tuesday, October 28.

Prosecutors say Genesis Mata was tortured and killed inside a guest room at the La Quinta Inn on Riverside Drive in August.

Graciela Bustomente, 28, and the child’s father Ray Mata, Jr., 31, face charges of first degree murder, torture, aggravated mayhem and child abuse. Each offense carries the death penalty.

Court documents say both admitted to abusing Genesis and their other children.

Child Protective Services already had an active case involving Mata before the girl’s death.

Both remain in jail without bail.
