BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — A Bakersfield police officer is facing federal charges for allegedly exploiting a minor.

Investigators say Marc Lugo used Instagram to contact a 15-year-old girl from South Carolina to ask her to send him explicit photos.

Lugo was arraigned Thursday at the federal courthouse in Bakersfield and pleaded not guilty to charges including sexual exploitation of a minor and receipt and distribution of child pornography

He’s being held in custody until a detention hearing next week. The Bakersfield Police Department has placed him on leave.

Lugo could be sentenced to more than three decades in prison if he’s convicted.
