BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — More witnesses took the stand Wednesday in the trial of Maya Hernandez, 20, who faces second-degree murder charges in the death of her 1-year-old son in southwest Bakersfield.
Hernandez, of Visalia, is accused of leaving her two young children inside a hot car while she received a lip filler injection at a medical spa on Real Road in June.
The prosecution presented testimony Wedensday from police detectives and a forensic pathologist who gave details about the cause and manner of death of Amilio Gutierrez, 1, who was found in Hernandez’s vehicle. The pathologist testified the child’s death was ruled an accident caused by extreme heat inside the car. Authorities say Amilio’s body temperature reached 107 degrees.
Amilio’s 2-year-old brother survived.
Hernandez has pleaded not guilty.
Trial resumes Thursday.
