preliminary hearing postponed for bakersfield couple accused of torture, murder

A Bakersfield couple accused of torturing and murdering an 8-year-old girl will have to wait two weeks for their preliminary hearing.

Ray Mata, Jr., 31, and Graciela Bustamonte, 27, appeared in court Tuesday where a judge delayed proceedings until October 28.

The couple are each charged with first-degree murder, torture, aggravated mayhem and child abuse following the death of Mata’s daughter Genesis Mata whose body was discovered August 2 inside a bathtub in a guest room at La Quinta Inn near Buck Owens Boulevard.

The 8-year-old had reportedly been burned with boiling water, whipped with a cable or cord and punched in the stomach.

Both Mata and Bustamonte allegedly admitted to abusing the child and could face the death penalty if they’re convicted.
