BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — Another short delay as lawyers prepare the case against a Visalia woman accused of the heat-related death of her toddler in southwest Bakersfield.
Attorneys on Tuesday said they’re ready for trial in the case Maya Hernandez, 20, but are forced to wait until a courtroom becomes available next month.
Hernandez is charged with murder, involuntary manslaughter, and child abuse, after allegedly leaving her 1- and 2-year-old sons inside a Toyota Corolla Hybrid on June 29 while she got a lip filler injection at a medical spa on Real Road. Temperatures reached 101 degrees in Bakersfield that day.
One-year-old Amillio Gutierrez was taken to Adventist Health where he died after registering a body temperature of 107 degrees. The 2-year-old survived.
Hernandez told investigators she left the air conditioning running, but officials say that vehicle model shuts off after an hour — if no action is taken.
