BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — A major Kern County highway was shut down Tuesday morning following after a massive crash involving dozens of motorists east of Bakersfield.
The California Highway Patrol reports 43 vehicles, whose drivers were faced with maneuvering through thick fog, got into a pileup shortly after 8:00 a.m. Tuesday on Highway 58, forcing the shutdown of the roadway between Towerline and General Beale Roads.
No fatalities were reported however nine people were taken to several Kern County hospitals with moderate to major injuries.
The CHP says visibility was down to approximately 50 to 60 feet.
Traffic was backed up for at least one mile.
Highway 58 is open as of Wednesday, January 28.
