BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — The case has been delayed concerning a Visalia mother convicted of child endangerment in the hot-car death of her son in southwest Bakersfield.
A judge told attorneys Tuesday to return next week for further discussions in the case of Maya Hernandez, 20, who left her two young boys inside a car on a triple-digit day in June 2025.
Hernandez left the boys alone while she waited for over two hours to get a Brazilian Butt Wax at a spa on South Real Road. Amilio Gutierrez, 1, died from heat stroke. His 2-year-old brother survived.
The next hearing is set for February 11 to determine if Hernandez will face a retrial on the charges of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter.
A mistrial was declared on those counts after the jury deadlocked during her original trial in December 2025.
