BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — A plea deal has been reached in the case of a Visalia woman whose young son died inside a hot car in southwest Bakersfield.
Maya Hernandez, 20, pleaded no contest Wednesday to involuntary manslaughter. She was convicted in December 2025 on two counts of child cruelty, but the jury deadlocked on a charge of second-degree murder.
Amilio Gutierrez, 1, died of heat stroke after he and his 2-year-old brother were left alone inside a Toyota Corolla for more than two hours while Hernandez underwent a cosmetic procedure at a medical spa on Real Road in June 2025.
Hernandez will be sentenced to 15 years on the manslaughter charge on March 15, 2026.
