DELANO, CA (KUZZ) — The startling news about Cesar Chavez has prompted officials to consider changing the name of a Delano high school that bears Chavez’s name.
This week, the New York Times released a bombshell report of rape and sexual abuse by the late co-founder of the United Farmworkers Union. The story prompted student-led group Loud for Tomorrow to launch an online petition to change the name of Cesar E. Chavez High School.
The petition quickly gained several hundred signatures and prompted officials with the Delano Unified School District to consider a formal review into a possible name change at the school on Browning Road.
The city of Delano was the birthplace of the UFW, serving as the hub of the Delano 1965 grape strike. UFW is the nation’s largest and longest-enduring farm workers union.
