BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — Kern County supervisors have approved spending $2 million in state funding to allow sheep to graze on county land.
The reason? it reduces the risk of wildfire.
County officials report prescribed grazing is used throughout the state to reduce flammable vegetation.
State Assembly Bill 105, passed last year and sponsored by Senator Melissa Hurtado, through Supervisor Chris Parlier, granted the funding to Kern County.
Fire officials say the action will also spur the economic impact of sheep herding in Kern County.
