BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — A preliminary hearing has been delayed for a Bakersfield man facing murder charges after a suspected DUI crash on the Westside Parkway.
Tomice Fryman, Jr., 51, returns to court August 6, 2026, to answer to charges including DUI, second-degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter, fatal hit-and-run, and other charges, after allegedly killing Zachariah Byrd who was walking along the parkway near the Mohawk Avenue overpass last May.
Prosecutors say Fryman was speeding at nearly 100 m.p.h. and went home with part of Byrd’s body lodged in his vehicle before turning himself in over nine hours later.
Fryman’s attorney says Byrd may have intentionally stepped into traffic.
