BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — The board of the Bakersfield City School District is set to consider seven potential new names for Cesar E. Chavez Elementary School.
A committee reviewed names submitted by students, staff, and members of the community to prepare a list of recommended names for the Board.
Suggested names for the elementary school located on Mesa Marin Drive include Mesa Marin Elementary, Citrus Grove, Horizon View, Sunrise Valley, Mountain View, Harvest Valley, and Katherinie Johnson Elementary School.
The renaming comes after an investigation published in March by The New York Times details allegations that the civil rights icon systematically groomed and sexually abused young girls and women within the United Farm Workers movement.
The Board meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at 1300 Baker Street.
The final name selection is scheduled for the June 23, 2026 meeting.
