BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — A 61-year-old man has been sentenced to 32 years to life in prison for shooting an acquaintance eight times and leaving him for dead in a field in east Bakersfield.
Rogelio Alvarez was convicted June 10, 2026, of attempted murder, assault with a firearm, and fraud, after luring Joe Fuentes to a secluded area and shooting him in the face, neck, shoulders and back.
The shooting in May 2024 occurred after a woman who was accompanying the men took Fuentes’ cellphone.
Fuentes survived after managing to reach help.
Prosecutors say the shooting was likely motivated by a debt Alvarez owed the victim.
