BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — Kern County is suing the City of Bakersfield over its newly approved sewer rate increase plan.
County officials call the hike unprecedented and argue it violates the California Constitution by including stormwater costs in sewer fees.
The Bakersfield City Council approved the five-year rate increase in May. Under the plan, the annual sewer rate would jump from about $247 to $475 in the first year, then increase by $100 annually, reaching $875 dollars by fiscal year 2030-31.
The county also alleges the city breached an agreement by using sewer fees for stormwater-related expenses.
