CALIFORNIA CITY, CA (KUZZ) — CoreCivic has sold two of California’s largest immigration detention centers, including the controversial center in California City.
The nation’s second-largest private corrections and detention management company sold the facilities in Cal City and Otay Mesa to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in a deal worth nearly $1.5 billion.
CoreCivic expects to continue managing both centers under existing ICE contracts.
The California City facility on Virginia Boulevard has faced ongoing criticism from activists over reported poor conditions for detainees.
Cal City will hold two appeal hearings at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, 2026, regarding the center.
