BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — The Bakersfield Police Department could soon add a high-tech K-9 to its team.
The city is set to receive more than $404,000 from Kern County to purchase its first robotic canine, known as Spot.
The robot is designed to detect hazardous materials, including fentanyl and explosives, provide live video feeds, and assist officers with building searches and barricaded suspect situations.
If approved by the City Council at their meeting Wednesday, July 15, 2026, BPD plans to purchase the robotic unit immediately.
