BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — Bakersfield city leaders are considering whether the city should adopt a sanctuary city policy aimed at protecting immigrants and increasing transparency surrounding federal immigration enforcement.
During Wednesday’s City Council meeting, members agreed to hold a TRUTH Act community forum to discuss possible policy changes after several residents spoke in support of exploring the issue.
Vice Mayor Manpreet Kaur criticized conditions at ICE facilities, calling them cruel and inhumane. Ward 2 Councilmember Andrae Gonzales also raised concerns about the impact of federal immigration enforcement on local neighborhoods and communities of color.
A special committee is expected to review the issue within the next three to four weeks and determine possible next steps.
