BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — A Bakersfield man is facing trial in connection with the fatal stabbing of his estranged wife during a family gathering earlier this year.
Prosecutors allege Rafael Estrada, 45, followed his estranged wife Taylor Estrada, 32, into a bedroom during the celebration and stabbed her in the neck in front of at least one child.
Defense attorneys acknowledge Estrada killed his wife, but are arguing the case should be considered second-degree murder, claiming the killing was not planned or premeditated.
The stabbing happened in May 2025 at a family gathering in east Bakersfield held after an eighth-grade graduation party that Estrada was not invited to attend.
