BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — Bakersfield city leaders are considering whether to pursue a sanctuary city policy following a packed and often heated City Council meeting Wednesday night.
A sanctuary city is a municipality with local policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.
During Wednesday’s meeting, dozens of residents spoke against the proposal, arguing it could weaken local law enforcement efforts and leave Bakersfield residents without adequate protection.
The idea will be reviewed by the city’s Laws and Legislation Committee before any recommendation returns to the full City Council.
The U.S. Department of Justice reports there are only a handful of cities around the country that are designated “sanctuary cities,” including Los Angeles, Chicago, New Orleans and Portland.
