BAKERSFIELD, CA (KUZZ) — The Bakersfield Police Department will welcome a new assistant chief later this month, with longtime BPD officer and Bakersfield native Ted King set to take on the role Sept. 21.
King, a captain who has served with BPD for more than 22 years, grew up in Bakersfield and attended North High School and Bakersfield College. He later served in the U.S. Army and deployed twice to the Middle East.
King joined the Bakersfield Police Department in 2005 and has worked in patrol, robbery-homicide and special operations. He was promoted to captain in 2022.
King said his specific responsibilities as assistant chief are still being determined. He said his priorities will include supporting Chief Brent Stratton’s vision for the department while maintaining strong connections with the community.
King is filling the assistant chief position that became vacant when Stratton was appointed police chief in May. He will join two other assistant chiefs in helping lead the department.
